Belt Sander

What is a Belt Sander?

Belt Sander

A belt sander is a tool that makes the job of sanding down pieces of wood a breeze. It has a sanding disc attached tightly to its rotary belt, where it rotates at a rapid pace in order to make quick work of rough surfaces and edges on wooden constructs.

The sanding disc has materials on it that are very similar to sandpaper. When placed on something, it enables the user to make it into a smooth texture with practically no coercion. It can accomplish jobs in minutes that would normally take hours. Therefore, it is a very important tool for a woodworker, a renovator, or even a homeowner to have in their workshop.

How to Use a Belt Sander

Using a belt sander is rather quite simple. The first step is to make sure the thing you are working on is secured with a vice. When you get ready to do a sanding job, get a secure and firm grip on your sander. Always start the sander with the belt and disc resting on the wooden piece you want to work on; never start it before you have secured it on the piece. When you turn it on, move it back and forth in a steady motion. Never tip it over or to the sides.

Belt Sander Safety Tips

  • Protect your eyes, lungs, ears, hands, and feet
  • Wear protective plastic goggles when operating one of these, or any other power tool
  • You should adorn thick gloves and boots as a precaution, as accidents do happen
  • Wear a dust mask, or the like, so that you do not inhale anything produced from using your sander
  • You should put in some ear buds, or noise-cancelling headphones, since sanders operate at very high decibels and may damage your hearing
  • Furthermore, you should always check your materials for any metal trappings
